Quality Control

EVERY YEAR WE MAKE QUALITY CONTROL ARRANGEMENTS of many varieties of herbaceous peonies and tree peonies after long-term dry storage in our coolers. Our experience can be used as a guide to what may be possible under ideal storage conditions. We have found that for the longest-term dry storage it is important to intersperse the individual flowers with plain newsprint. We have had very good results with high quality blooms and good vase life after about 2 – 4 weeks of dry storage at about 33°F – 34°F in our coolers.

Our herbaceous single and Japanese varieties and tree peonies will not store quite as long as semi-double and double varieties, but they may still perform very well even after about 2 – 3 weeks of dry storage. Herbaceous semi-double and double varieties may store even better. We have had first class results with dry storage of these varieties for 3 – 4 weeks and even up to 5 weeks.

The type of growing season and the weather during harvest influences storage life and vase life. When the growing season is particularly conducive to vigorous, healthy growth, the flowers tend to be stronger and have a longer storage life and vase life. Disease control is important to assist long-term storage. We are careful to keep our coolers and processing area as clean and disease free as possible.
